Event date: 9th May 2018

Location: Shahid Doctor Lavasani Hospital, Tehran, Iran

Barsian Darou was honored to be a part of executive and scientific team of  “Hemovigilance and Patient blood Management” educational program that had been hold on 9th May, 2018 at Shahid Doctor Lavasani Hospital, Tehran, Iran.

Barsian Darou had proudly supported the lecture of Professor Stephan von Haehling from Germany titled “Management of Iron deficiency anemia in cardiac disease”, that took place in Shahid Doctor Lavasani Hospital conference hall, during this scientific event. (9th May 2018).

Event Summary:

“Hemovigilance and Patient blood Management” educational programs are conducted as a joined event by High Institute for Education and Research in Transfusion Medicine and Iranian Society of Blood Transfusion, to enable all the hospital across the country to reduce both anemia and RBC transfusions focusing on both the methodology of how and of what to implement.

Hemovigilance is responsible for successes in transfusion medicine by quantifying errors and adverse events. Hemovigilance also emphasizes the risks of unnecessary transfusions and stimulates the development of evidence‐based guidelines and triggers. Hemovigilance aims at continuous quality improvement and patient safety. Patient blood management promotes improvement of practices to prevent undesirable outcomes. Adoption of both programs is encouraged by demonstration of reduction in both, risks and costs. Measures of success have been the percentage reduction in transfusions and lowering of costs (easy to measure), and not the more desirable increases in appropriate transfusions (difficult to measure).

More than 30% of the world’s population are anemic with serious economic consequences including reduced work capacity and other obstacles to national welfare and development. Red blood cell transfusion is the mainstay to correct anemia, but it is also 1 of the top 5 overused procedures. Patient blood management (PBM) is a proactive, patient-centered, and multidisciplinary approach to manage anemia, optimize hemostasis, minimize iatrogenic blood loss, and harness tolerance to anemia. Although the World Health Organization has endorsed PBM in 2010, many hospitals still seek guidance with the implementation of PBM in clinical routine.

Main topics that were discussed during this event:

  • Patient Blood Management planning for implementation
  • Indications of red cell transfusion
  • Acute transfusion reactions
  • Platelet refractoriness management
  • Management of Iron deficiency anemia in cardiac disease
  • Delay transfusion reaction
